A few things you might be wondering.
What exactly is tallow?
Tallow is rendered animal fat that has been used for generations in cooking, soapmaking, and skincare.
At Twin Tallow, we start with locally sourced Arizona beef suet from grass fed, grass finished, pasture raised cows.
Suet is the dense fat found around the kidneys. Once it is slowly rendered and purified, it becomes the smooth, creamy tallow we use as the foundation of our face, body, and scalp formulas.
What makes it so interesting for skincare is its naturally rich fatty acid profile.
It contains lipids like oleic acid, stearic acid, and palmitic acid, which help soften, condition, and support the skin barrier.
So no, it is not just “beef fat in a jar.”
There is a reason I chose it.
Will tallow clog my pores?
Not automatically.
“Tallow is pore clogging” gets repeated a lot online, but skin is much more individual than that.
Our Beauty Balm is formulated with tallow, jojoba, vitamin E, and either lavender or no essential oil at all. Jojoba also helps give the formula a lighter feel because its wax ester structure is similar to the wax esters naturally found in our own sebum.
If you are acne prone, start with a very small amount.
Seriously, less than you think.
Warm it between your fingertips and press it into the skin rather than applying a thick layer.
A little goes a long way.
Does Twin Tallow smell like beef?
No.
Properly rendered tallow should have a very mild natural scent.
Once it is blended into our formulas, you are much more likely to notice the botanicals, oils, or seasonal scent profile than the tallow itself.
If your first thought when you hear “tallow skincare” is am I going to smell like dinner? — no.
Why did my balm melt?
Because real fats react to temperature.
Tallow softens as it gets warm, so summer weather, a hot delivery truck, or an Arizona mailbox can absolutely change the texture.
That does not mean the product has gone bad.
Place it somewhere cool or pop it into the refrigerator briefly until it firms back up.
The texture may look a little different afterward, but the formula is still usable.
One of the tradeoffs of working with real fats and butters is that they behave like real fats and butters.
Why does the texture sometimes vary?
Small batch products are allowed to have a little personality.
Temperature changes can make balms and whips feel firmer, softer, smoother, or occasionally a little grainy.
That graininess can happen when naturally occurring fats and butters melt and cool at different rates.
It does not automatically mean anything is wrong with the product.
We make in small batches instead of forcing every jar into the exact same texture with a long list of stabilizers.
How should I store my products?
Keep them somewhere cool and dry and away from prolonged direct sunlight or heat.
You do not need to refrigerate them under normal conditions.
That said, if your bathroom gets very hot or your house turns into an Arizona oven while you are away, move them somewhere cooler.
How much Beauty Balm should I use?
Much less than you think.
Start with about a rice grain to pea sized amount depending on the area you are covering.
Warm it between your fingertips and gently press it into the skin.
You can always add more.
Using too much can make even a beautiful balm feel heavy.
Can I use Beauty Balm under makeup?
Yes.
The trick is using a very thin layer.
Let it settle into the skin for a few minutes before applying makeup.
If your foundation starts sliding around, you probably used too much balm.
Can I use Beauty Balm anywhere besides my face?
Absolutely.
I use it wherever skin needs extra support.
Think:
hands
cuticles
elbows
knees
heels
neck
dry patches
around the nose during dry weather
For larger areas of the body, Citrine Crème and our seasonal Skin Whips make more sense because they are designed specifically for body care.
What’s the difference between Root Bloom Original + Sensitive?
Both formulas start with the same Root Bloom foundation:
our six week horsetail + nettle infusion, pumpkin seed oil, and tallow.
The difference is the final botanical and the kind of scalp experience you want.
Original — Rosemary ct Cineole
This is the more stimulating option.
We use Rosemary ct Cineole from Eden Botanicals because chemotype matters, and this version gives the scalp that fresh, invigorating, almost awakened feel.
Rosemary also has human research behind it for supporting hair growth with consistent topical use, which is one of the reasons I chose it for the Original formula.
I would choose Original if your main focus is thinning, shedding, slow growth, or you simply like a more active scalp treatment.
Sensitive — Cedarwood Atlas
This is the softer option.
We use Cedarwood Atlas from Eden Botanicals because I wanted a formula for scalps that need support without the stronger stimulation of rosemary.
It has a warm, grounding profile and works beautifully with the nourishing Root Bloom base.
I would choose Sensitive if your scalp tends to be dry, reactive, easily irritated, or just does not love intense stimulation.
Original = stimulating + stronger hair growth evidence
Sensitive = gentler + grounding scalp support
Same Root Bloom foundation.
Two different ways to care for your roots.
How do I use Root Bloom?
Apply directly to the scalp and massage it in with your fingertips or a scalp massage comb.
For most people, 2 to 3 times per week is plenty.
Leave it on for at least 30 minutes before washing.
If your scalp does well with longer treatments, you can leave it on overnight.
Consistency matters more than drowning your scalp in oil.
Why does Root Bloom need to be massaged in?
Because the goal is scalp care, not just coating the hair.
Massaging helps spread the product evenly across the scalp and makes sure the formula actually reaches the skin around the follicles.
It also turns a two minute step into one of those little things that actually feels good to do.
Are your products natural?
Our formulas are built around traditional fats, botanical oils, butters, herbs, and carefully chosen aromatic ingredients.
But I do not love using “natural” as a blanket marketing word because natural does not automatically mean better, safer, or more effective.
I would rather tell you exactly what is in the formula and why I chose it.
That is the whole point of our Ingredients page.
Are your products pregnancy safe?
Pregnancy can change what is appropriate for you, especially when essential oils or botanical extracts are involved.
Our simplest formulas are generally the easiest place to start, especially unscented options.
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, review the ingredient list for the specific product and check with your healthcare provider if you are unsure.
I would rather you feel completely comfortable with what you are using than make a blanket “pregnancy safe” claim.
Are your products good for sensitive skin?
They can be, but sensitive skin is personal.
We intentionally keep our formulas short, but even a beautiful ingredient can be irritating to the wrong person.
If your skin is very reactive:
choose unscented when available
introduce one new product at a time
patch test first
start with a small amount
Simple formulas make it easier to know what your skin actually likes.
Why don’t your formulas have huge ingredient lists?
Because more ingredients do not automatically make a better product.
I would rather use a handful of ingredients that each have a clear purpose than add extras just to make the label look impressive.
Every formula starts with the same question:
Does this ingredient actually belong here?
If the answer is no, it does not go in the jar.
Do your products contain preservatives?
Most Twin Tallow formulas are anhydrous, meaning they do not contain added water.
Water based products generally require a preservation system because water creates an environment where microbes can grow.
Oil and balm based formulas are different.
That does not mean they are indestructible, though.
Always use clean, dry hands and avoid introducing water directly into the jar.
What if my order arrives damaged?
Email us within 5 days of delivery with your order number and clear photos of the product and packaging.
We will take a look and make it right when appropriate.
Do you accept returns?
Because these are personal care products, opened or used items cannot be returned.
If your order arrives incorrect or damaged, contact us and we will help.
How long does shipping take?
Orders are generally prepared within 2 to 4 business days.
Once your package leaves us, carrier transit time is outside our control, but tracking will be provided whenever available.
During hot weather, keep an eye on tracking if you can.
Your tallow would much rather be inside with you than sitting in a mailbox all afternoon.
