Why Tallow?

Skin recognizes simplicity.

Tallow has been used for generations for one very simple reason: it works beautifully with skin.

Its naturally rich fatty acid profile makes it especially useful for dry, depleted, overworked, or barrier compromised skin.

At Twin Tallow, we start with locally sourced grass fed + finished tallow and build from there with purposeful oils, butters, botanicals, and extracts.

Every formula starts with the same question:

Does this ingredient actually belong here?

No filler just to make the texture prettier.
No unnecessarily complicated ingredient lists.
No ten step routine required.

Just thoughtfully chosen ingredients designed to soften, replenish, and support the skin barrier.

Why does the skin barrier matter so much?

Because almost everything we want from healthy skin starts there.

As an esthetician, I look at the skin barrier as the foundation of skin function.

The outermost layer of the skin is called the stratum corneum, and one of my favorite ways to explain it is like bricks + mortar.

The “bricks” are corneocytes, or mature skin cells.

The “mortar” around them is a lipid matrix made largely of ceramides, cholesterol, and fatty acids.

That lipid layer is what helps keep water inside the skin and unwanted irritants out.

When those lipids are disrupted, the barrier becomes more permeable and transepidermal water loss, or TEWL, goes up.

Basically, water escapes faster than it should.

That’s when skin can start feeling:

• tight
• flaky
• rough
• dehydrated
• stingy
• reactive
• suddenly sensitive to products it used to tolerate

And this is where skincare can get tricky.

When the barrier is already stressed, adding more acids, retinoids, exfoliation, scrubs, or constantly switching products can sometimes make the problem worse instead of better.

More skincare is not always better skincare.

A little skin science I love

Your skin barrier is not just there to keep your face from feeling dry.

It is constantly helping regulate hydration, defend against environmental stressors, and maintain the conditions your skin needs to function normally.

When the barrier is working well, skin tends to look smoother, feel more supple, and tolerate the rest of your routine better.

It can also recover more efficiently from things like dry weather, over exfoliation, travel, sun exposure, and overly aggressive routines.

That is why I care so much about supporting the barrier before chasing every new active.

Healthy skin needs more than turnover. It needs lipids, water, and protection too.

What does tallow have to do with that?

This is where tallow gets really interesting.

Tallow naturally contains fatty acids including oleic acid, stearic acid, and palmitic acid.

These are the same types of lipids we think about when we talk about conditioning, softening, and supporting the skin’s protective surface.

Tallow is also naturally semi solid at room temperature, which gives it that rich, cushiony feel without needing a long list of waxes or texture enhancers.

Once it touches warm skin, it softens and melts beautifully.

That lets it spread in a very thin layer and help slow moisture loss from the surface.

It is not about smothering the skin.

It is about giving dry skin a lipid rich layer of support.

Fun fact: your barrier is supposed to be slightly acidic

Healthy skin naturally maintains a slightly acidic surface, often called the acid mantle.

That environment helps support normal barrier function and the skin’s microbiome.

Harsh cleansers, over exfoliation, and constantly stripping the skin can disrupt that balance.

It is another reason I am such a believer in doing less, but doing it well.

The skin is already incredibly smart.

Sometimes the best thing we can do is stop fighting it.

Why grass fed + finished tallow?

Because quality matters all the way back to the source.

We start with locally sourced Arizona beef suet from grass fed, grass finished, pasture raised cows.

Suet is the dense fat found around the kidneys. When it is slowly rendered and purified, it becomes the smooth, creamy tallow used in our formulas.

I care about the source because tallow is not a tiny supporting ingredient for us.

It is the foundation.

The better the starting material, the better the base I have to build the rest of the formula around.

Our tallow is slowly rendered and used in small batch formulas designed to stay intentionally simple.

Less, but better.

Twin Tallow really came from stepping away from the idea that good skincare has to be complicated.

As an esthetician, I am surrounded by products, treatments, actives, and routines.

Then pregnancy changed the way I looked at all of it.

I started paying much closer attention to what I was putting on my own skin, what I would use around my babies, and what actually felt necessary.

I stopped asking:

What else can I add?

And started asking:

What can I take away without losing what the skin actually needs?

That mindset became Twin Tallow.

If I wouldn’t put it on my children’s skin, it doesn’t go in the jar.

Simple does not mean basic.

It means every ingredient has a reason to be there.

And every formula is made with the skin barrier in mind.
